Mini PC for Home Assistant: What to Look For

ACEMAGIC V1

A home-automation hub runs around the clock, mostly waiting for a sensor to change. It needs to be reliable, small and cheap to keep on. It doesn't need much speed. That points to the low-power end of ACEMAGIC's range.

1. Low power draw

The machine never sleeps, so its power use adds up. The V1 is built around Intel's low-power chips. The N150 version ships with a 12 V / 2.5 A adapter (30 W), and the N97 version lists a 12 W base power for its processor. Those are about as frugal as Windows-class PCs get.

2. It should come back on by itself

After a power cut, your hub has to restart without anyone pressing a button. ACEMAGIC lists auto power-on for the K1 Ryzen 7 7730U version, which starts the machine by itself when power comes back, and aims it at home-lab users who need exactly that. On other models, check for an equivalent setting in the BIOS. Our BIOS key guide shows how to get in.

3. Wired Ethernet

Wi-Fi works, but a cable is steadier for something that runs your lights and locks. Every ACEMAGIC model has an Ethernet port; Gigabit is plenty for this job.

4. Enough storage for history

Automation logs, camera snapshots and backups grow over time. The V1 N97 comes with a 1 TB SSD, double the 512 GB in the N150 version. The K1 with the Ryzen R2544 has two M.2 slots if you want a separate backup drive.

5. Enough memory to run more than one thing

Many people start with a hub and then add a media server or ad blocker on the same box. The V1 N150 tops out at 16 GB in a single slot. The K1 R2544 has two slots, up to 32 GB, and the K1 7730U version comes with 32 GB of dual-channel DDR4.

A note on the operating system

These PCs ship with Windows 11 Pro. Many home-automation setups run on Linux instead. ACEMAGIC lists Ubuntu and Linux compatibility for the M1 and M5. For the V1 and K1, it isn't stated, so plan to check before you wipe Windows.
